Keiths Arrival! (28th March 2010)

So bright and early this morning I’m up to switch rooms and head off to the airport to meet Keith. He came into KL last night from home but because of the arrival time couldn’t get to Borneo until this morning.

It’s really nice to see him and it’s gonna be great to be able to do some things together here, he’s looking a little tried, but after travelling for a day or so I guess he’s gonna be. The problem is I’m not sure he’s aware of, or ready for, the pace of the ‘Binfield Borneo Tour’!

After we arrive back into town and Keith settles in a bit we head out to see the sights of Kuching. As I’ve been here 36 hours already I’ve seen them, so instead I’m able to play the tour guide and show him around.

On the other side of the river there is a fort, Fort Margherita, which James Brooke built for his wife, Rani Margaret, in 1879. Keith’s been reading all about James Brooke before coming out to Borneo so we decided to take a tambang (small boat) across the river to take a look. Unfortunately we managed to get on the wrong boat and instead ended up at the Sarawak State Assembly Building! The only thing going on there was wedding photos, without the wedding it seems, I think they tend to do that here, they have the photos done either before or after the actual wedding rather than during it. So apart from wandering up to a view point there wasn’t much to do so we got the next boat back again.

Last night the waterfront was really quite busy with lots of the cafe bars open and lots of people milling around and strolling the promenade. Last night was Saturday night though and tonight is Sunday and very very quiet! We found a little bar though and had a couple of drinks to celebrate the start of Keiths holiday before getting a bite to eat and heading off to bed before his jet lag takes over too much! :-)
