Kuching Cultural Village (29th March 2010)

After a bit of a later start this morning we made our way to the Sarawak Cultural Village just outside Kuching. The village is a living museum which has examples of traditional dwellings built by the different peoples of Sarawak all situated around a very pretty lake.

These kind of museums can go one of two ways to be honest, they can either be great experiences presented very well and in tune with the local people they represent OR they can be totally insensitive and out of synch with what they are supposed to be about. Fortunately in this case it was a really good living museum which gave us a good insight into several different cultures and the ways of tribal life. After visiting the several different dwellings of the various tribal groups there was a show of traditional Malay and indigenous dances. Again, this is something which can be quite cringe worthy in some instances but was actually very well done and very enjoyable.

This evening we went for another stroll along the waterfront and a couple of beers before bed.

Before bed though, we both needed to get some money out of the ATM as tomorrow morning we’re off to Mulu NP for 3 days to see some caves and do some trekking and I can’t imagine a NP has too many ATMs.

Keith had left the UK with no Malaysian currency at all, I think he’s copying my usual tactic (!) and had already tried to get some money out in KL airport to no avail! Instead, before I met with him, he took some money out on his CC! :-(

So there we were on Sunday evening trying to get some money out and after trying 3 different ATMs it was obvious Keith wasn’t going to be given any! :-( We both have accounts with Nationwide and for one small moment I was a little concerned that Nationwide was the one playing up not Keiths card. Fortunately for me though, but not for Keith, I managed to get more funds. So far, it’s not looking good for Keith though is it?! It could be a very quiet, very hungry two weeks for him!

Lucky for him he has a very understanding girlfriend (:-)) and after a transfer I managed to bail him out! :-)
